New guidance for trademark filers on identity verification and account user roles

On August 6, 2022, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) will begin requiring all USPTO.gov account holders to verify their identities as a condition for filing electronic trademark forms. Read our latest Director’s blog for more information. As part of our program, account holders must select a user role when verifying their identities. The USPTO has issued a Federal Register Notice (FRN) discussing user roles and providing more guidance for specific issues and situations. Read the FRN in the Federal Register.

The USPTO is also hosting a public webinar to further discuss user roles on Wednesday, July 13 from 2-3:30 p.m. ET. During the webinar, we’ll take an in-depth look at how selecting the appropriate user role will help the USPTO regulate unauthorized trademark submissions and how you can determine the right role for your filing situation. I am the president of Specialized Distributors, Inc. My partner and I formed SDI to serve as a buying and marketing group for automotive engine parts distributors. We are based in Pinellas Park, Florida, which is near St. Petersburg. Since 1989, our group has grown to include 71 members.

When we first got started, buying groups were a relatively new concept in our industry.
